What this site is about..
The regularly published GERS figures suggest that Scotland has higher public expenditure than our taxation income and the claim is often made that we are subsidised by England because on a per head basis Scotland appears to gain higher expenditure than many parts of England. Crucially however these figures exclude Oil and Gas taxation revenues which would accrue under international law to an independent Scottish Government. It also excludes UK wide expenditure such as defence which would show much higher levels of spending being made in other areas. As it is both London and Northern Ireland have higher spending than Scotland and given our geographical mass our public expenditure is not excessive and independent figures suggest we could maintain our current levels of expenditure comfortably without having the enormous national debt which the British Government has. This site hopes to contribute towards an informed decision by the Scottish people to opt for Independence ie the normal powers that most countries enjoy through a democratic referendum ran by our own Government. We hope to do this by 1) Making available enough information for all Scots to make an informed choice on independence 2) providing campaigning ideas and a central hub for successful activity 3) improving the exchange of information between independence supporters in Scotland and abroad (including working closely with other movements who wish to break up Britain or free themselves from other historic imperial powers) 4) encouraging positive debate about Scotland's future and 5) providing accurate information for the foreign press, Scottish ex-patriots and all those who have any interest in Scotland. The signs at the moment are good. Recent opinion polls have often shown an absolute majority (over 50% of those who expressed a preference) for independence and the amount of people who feel Scottish rather than British is at an all time high of 86%. There are also substantial numbers of people who want more powers for the Parliament (the unionist Liberal Democrats and Conservatives have both suggested they might favour a form of fiscal autonomy where the Scottish parliament could raise and spend it's own finances) which can only be guaranteed with independence. There is also rising support on the other side of the border for Scottish independence. Since the establishment of devolution the number of people in England who feel themselves more British than English has substantially declined and there is a rising tide of support for independence in England, Wales and Cornwall. The potential is there then for victory and there is no doubt that independence is the crucial issue in Scottish politics and the most important question today in Scotland.
